Rare Books and Maps and Ephemera

at the VFW hall located at 190 Main Street, Saugus, MA.
Preview: 4pm Day of Sale

For our next sale we have scheduled an exceptional auction of rare books, maps, and and 19th century pamphlets. The books represent the library from the June 28th collection as well as a significant collection de-accessioned from the Congregational Church Library's 150 year old archive. Highlights include a 1799 Map of the Americas, 1880 & 1884 Double-elephant Palestine Exploration Fund archaeological maps and charts, a Map of New Bern, NC with a letter on the back from a Union soldier written the day after the Civil War battle at New Bern, 19th century maps relating to land auctions in Boston, 19th century engineering plans, 18th and 19th century etchings of English castles and towns.

Books will include: an 1825 edition of History of the Expedition to Russia, Undertaken by the Emperor Napoleon, in the Year 1812 by General, Count Philip de Segur, an 1822 2nd edition James Fenimore Cooper The Spy, 1858 1st edition Oliver Wendell Holmes The Autocrat at the Breakfast Table, complete collections including Sir Walter Scott's 48-volume Waverly Novels (ca. 1829-34), Charles Dickens' Illustrated Library (ca. 1861-66), John Ruskin's Works in the 20-volume Brantwood Edition (ca. 1891), and Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton's Works in the 42-volume Bulwer Edition (ca. 1865).

Other ephemera will feature a huge collection of 19th century pamphlets on subjects ranging from 19th century postage legislation, 19th century arguments regarding the gold standard and paper currency, to political speeches, legal decisions, and various comments on industry and commerce. In all there are over 1000 books, more than 40 maps, well over 300 pamphlets, and an interesting collection of large-format 19th century photographs of Middle-Eastern and Greek Archaeological sites.

Look below for photographs of all the cataloged lots. Clicking the thumbnail will take you to more and larger images, as well as more detailed descriptions and pre-auction estimates. If you wish to place an absentee or phone bid, please click on the link for the Phone/Absentee bid form (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this form). Just fill out the form in its entirety and fax it, along with a photocopy of your government-issued identification (driver's license, passport, military i.d., etc.). Applications can only be processed via fax or in person.

Paulo will be out of the office from Wednesday, July 11, until Monday, July 16. Emails, voice mails, and faxes will be answered upon his return.

Due to the fragile nature of some of these documents, absentee bids will only be accepted in-person the day of the auction and phone bids will not be accepted at all on these lots. As such, these pamphlets will not be listed by name in the catalog. Please look below, though, for a representative sampling of photos of these lots.
