This beautiful folk-painted ladderback chair is going to be a featured item at my August 28 auction. It appears to be a Mid-Pennsylvania piece, likely early-to-mid 19th century. We're not experts on this region or style, so we're providing a detailed photo tour of its features.

Please look through the photos provided to get a true sense of what a great chair this is.

As you can see from the chipping paint, everything is through-joinery. The stretchers are hand-chamfered while the legs are lathe-turned. Each foot has a lathe dimple, so my impression is that the chair has not been cut down. None of the feet are cut on the same plane. There are two stretchers and the skirt in front, and one stretcher on each of the other three sides. The rush seat is a herringbone pattern and is nice and tight and attractive on the top and bottom. The back stretcher is 3 3/4 inches from the ground, and the bottom front stretcher is 4 inches from the ground. The front legs are 19 inches tall and the back is 36 inches tall to the finials. The front legs are 18 3/4" wide and the rear legs are 15 inches wide. The seat is about 13 1/2 inches front to back
